Dr. Mitchel Burchfield has taught English composition and literature for over 25 years at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Texas. After spending two decades in a variety of businesses, he returned to college and received his B.S degree in Education (math and English) and his M.S. degree in English from Texas A & M University – Kingsville. He earned a doctorate in education from Grambling State University in Louisiana. As the Director of the Academic Center for Excellence, he helped develop and supervise the learning assistance efforts at Southwest Texas Junior College for several years. In addition to his English composition and literature courses, he has taught all levels of developmental mathematics, developmental writing, and reading at Southwest Texas Junior College. He also teaches online education courses for prospective teachers. Dr. Burchfield has published articles and made numerous presentations on a variety of subjects: attitude formation, classical rhetoric theory, curriculum theory, integrated reading & writing courses, and composition. He served on the Board of Directors of the Association for the Advancement of Educational Research for 10 years and served as president of that organization's National Academy of Educational Researchers. He is an active member of the National Association for Developmental Education and served as president of the Texas Association of Developmental Education during 2011-2012 period. He is coauthor, with David Sabrio, of Insightful Writing (Houghton Mifflin (Cengage), 2009), a rhetoric/reader textbook suitable for the highest developmental writing course, an integrated reading and writing course, or the first semester freshman college writing course. In his current position of Division Chair of Developmental Studies, Dr. Burchfield supervises the faculty who teach developmental education courses and functions as part of an administrative team to plan and improve the educational services provided by the college.
