Trustees approve vice presidents’ contracts for additional year

SWTJC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to extended the contracts of all the college vice presidents by one year, which are set to expire Aug. 31, 2023.

In other business, board members approved to enter into a 10-year contract with MP2 Energy at 4.135 cents per kilowatt-hour, which would represent savings for the college of $37,700 a year.

Other action taken by the trustees was the approval of the financial statement as of Jan. 31, along with minor corrections to the college’s local Policy ECC.

Margot Mata, vice president of student services, gave an update on the spring 2020 enrollment numbers.

According to Mata, the final enrollment numbers ended up at 6,752, which was approximately a two percent increase from the same time last year.

SWTJC President Hector Gonzales reported on a multitude of topics during the monthly president’s report to the board, including meeting with the Nueces Canyon superintendent and principal to discuss dual credit.

Gonzales also met with the new city manager for Carrizo Springs, Ronnie Guest.

“In meeting with Mr. Guest, we discussed the opportunities to enhance access to higher education in his community,” said Gonzales. “We discussed the future possibility of adult education and perhaps a study resource room within the public library.”

In other matters, Gonzales reported about the upcoming election for the board of trustees.

“Last day to file as a candidate was Feb. 14, we will have Mr. Flores in his place running unopposed, Mr. Moreno drew a candidate, and it will be Brian Hernandez,” said Gonzales. “Feb. 18 was the last day for a write-in candidate, and no one showed up, so we won’t have a write-in candidate.”
