SWTJC receives funds for emergency grants to student
Uvalde, TX April 30, 2020 - It has been confirmed from the U.S. Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos that SWTJC will receive $3,736,958 which represents the funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act signed into law, of which $1,868,479 must go directly to the students.
According to SWTJC President Hector Gonzales, “these funds will help cover the extraordinary cost in our response to COVID-19 and will also provide an additional layer of support to our students.”
College administration is awaiting further guidance Department of Education on the criteria of a student’s eligibility to receive funds.
“Students who incur added costs as a direct result of shifting from a face-to-face course to an online course are clearly the target population” said Gonzales “There is a great deal of gray area concerning who qualifies, according to the regulations, to receive assistance. The Department of Education needs to provide further guidance concerning which students are qualified.”
Students in need of assistance are encouraged to complete the application, which can be found on the college website.
SWTJC has a task force processing the applications for financial assistance to help keep students progressing toward academic and personal goals.
