SWTJC students make voices heard during community college day
"Our goal was to make our lawmakers aware of our concerns when it comes to the funding of community colleges," SWTJC Government Instructor Xaviera Haynes said.
The biennial event, organized by the Texas Association of Community Colleges, kicked off with speakers addressing a crowd of more than 1,500 students, faculty, staff, and administrators from Texas' 50 community college districts. PHOTOS
After the opening ceremony, the students were allowed to tour the Capitol and meet with their respective state senators and representatives.
Students made Texas lawmakers aware of their number one priority: increasing funding for community colleges.
Students met with State Representatives Tracy King, Ryan Guillen, Eddie Morales, and State Senator Judith Zaffirini.
State Representative Andrew Murr and Senators Roland Gutierrez and Pete Flores were unavailable to meet with students. However, students spoke to their staff members.
