Kids' College Event at SWTJC Uvalde: Inspiring Learning and Fun for Local Students

Uvalde, TX, July 18, 2023 - Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC) in Uvalde hosted its highly anticipated annual Kids’ College event from July 11-13. Approximately 100 enthusiastic 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from Uvalde schools eagerly participated in various engaging activities, creating lasting memories and inspiring a love for learning.
 
The three-day event was packed with an exciting lineup of interactive sessions showcasing the diverse talents and expertise of community members and SWTJC faculty. Students were immersed in various educational and recreational experiences that left a lasting impact on their young minds.
 
One of the highlights of Kids’ College was the energetic gym activities led by Phillip Botello and Caleb Rogers. The students eagerly participated in various sports and physical exercises, promoting teamwork, fitness and an active lifestyle.
 
Fostering creativity and innovation, the STEM Mobile Makerspace provided students with hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Guided by knowledgeable instructors, the young learners delved into the fascinating world of STEM, sparking their curiosity and problem-solving skills.
 
In collaboration with Castaño Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, students had the opportunity to explore self-defense techniques, enhancing their confidence and personal safety awareness. This engaging session empowered the children with valuable skills while promoting discipline and respect.
 
A standout feature of this year’s Kids’ College was the creation of “Sammy the Snake,” a delightful new addition to SWTJC’s Tate Building. Faculty member Claire Berrones and the participating students meticulously painted rocks to bring Sammy to life. This interactive project will grow yearly, symbolizing the event’s enduring impact and fostering a sense of belonging within the college community.
 
The STEM Club challenged students to think outside the box by constructing open free-standing circles using Pringles. This innovative exercise encouraged critical thinking and teamwork, fostering a spirit of exploration and creativity among the young participants.
 
Promoting mental health and team building, Paul Flores of the Uvalde Memorial Hospital provided a session that emphasized the importance of emotional well-being and effective communication within a team setting. This valuable exercise equipped the students with essential life skills, nurturing their personal growth and resilience.
 
The SWTJC Wildlife Department members entertained and educated the young learners with a captivating session of quail tag, combining fun and learning about local wildlife. This interactive experience kindled an appreciation for the natural world and emphasized the importance of environmental conservation.
 
Alejandro Gonzales Uvalde Elementary Coach hosted a thrilling physical education session and dodgeball tournament, accompanied by the popular parachute activity on the event’s final day. The children enthusiastically participated in these lively and engaging activities, promoting physical fitness and teamwork.
 
Recognizing the significance of mental health, the Children’s Bereavement Center of Uvalde provided a dedicated space for students to take a mental health break. They also conducted a session on managing emotions, empowering children with strategies to navigate their feelings in healthy ways.
 
Faculty members Xaviera Haynes and Dr. Mitchel Burchfield engaged the students in an enlightening session on teamwork and beekeeping. Through this unique experience, the young learners gained insights into the importance of collaboration and learned about the fascinating world of bees and their impact on the environment.
 
“None of this would have been possible without the outstanding team leaders, faculty and staff who dedicated their time and efforts to interact with the students and guide them through each session,” said Amanda Ibarra, event representative. “Their commitment to fostering a positive learning environment greatly contributed to the success of Kids’ College.”
 
SWTJC sincerely appreciates the maintenance department for their invaluable assistance in event preparation and ongoing support. The cafeteria staff provided delicious snacks daily, ensuring the students remained energized throughout their exciting adventures. Medina Electric generously donated water, while members of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police, and SWTJC Police provided security. Wade Carpenter contributed to the graduation photo session.
 
The Kids’ College event at SWTJC Uvalde was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on the young participants. Through engaging activities and the community’s unwavering support, these budding learners experienced a stimulating and fun-filled environment that fostered personal growth, teamwork, and a love for learning. SWTJC looks forward to hosting future editions of Kids’ College and continuing to inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators.
