SWTJC Associate Professor of Art Abel Ortiz Invited to Speak at UT Austin About Healing Murals of Uvalde

Uvalde, TX, April 2, 2024 - Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC) Associate Professor of Art Abel Ortiz recently gave a talk at the University of Texas at Austin about the Healing Murals of Uvalde. Ortiz helped lead the project of these murals, which included artists from all over Texas following the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde. During his talk, Ortiz shared insights into the transformative power of art in healing communities.

Ortiz's speaking engagement at UT Austin shed light on the significance of the Healing Murals project. The murals profoundly impacted the community in the wake of the devastating events of May 24, 2022. They served not only as a form of artistic expression but also as symbols of hope, resilience, and unity for the people of Uvalde.

In addition to his public presentation, Ortiz engaged in an in-depth discussion with students preparing for a research trip to Northern Ireland. The students are studying restorative justice and healing and will explore the role of murals in fostering healing and reconciliation. With their upcoming visit to Belfast and Derry, Northern Ireland, the students sought Ortiz's expertise to gain insights into how murals can serve as catalysts for community healing and reconciliation efforts.

Ortiz's firsthand experience leading the Healing Murals of Uvalde project provided valuable perspectives for the UT Austin students. By sharing his journey and the impact of the murals on the Uvalde community, Ortiz inspired the students to explore the potential of art as a tool for social change and healing.

Ortiz's invitation to speak at UT Austin highlights the significance of the Healing Murals project and SWTJC's commitment to fostering community engagement and innovation through the arts. As Ortiz continues to share his work with others, the legacy of the Healing Murals of Uvalde lives on as a testament to the transformative power of art in healing and uniting communities.
