Eagle Pass Fine Arts Company hosts Rabbit Hole performances
Rabbit Hole, a play about a couple struggling with the death of their son, ran Tuesday, March 27 through Wednesday, March 28. The two play performances were made possible with the help of SWTJC – Eagle Pass Campus, the City of Eagle Pass, and the Eagle Pass Public Library. This show marks the beginning of SWTJC-EP’s Fine Arts Company’s plan to host an annual drama production. The SWTJC-EP production was free to the public.
The idea to host a drama production was little more than a pipe dream at the start of the 2017 Fall Semester. Mr. Dennie Johnson, Ms. Valerie A. Ruiz, and Mr. Onesimo Martinez came together to help SWTJC students form the SWTJC-EP Fine Arts Company, in September of 2017. Mr. Onesimo Martinez quickly took the lead and became the club’s main sponsor and play director. Auditions were then held and four students were chosen to act in David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole. Xitlalli Cervantes played Becca Lopez, Diego Iruegas played Howie Lopez, Yezenia Martinez played Izzy Martinez, Nyckole Holguin played Nat Martinez, and Onesimo Martinez II played Jason.
The City of Eagle Pass provided the stage for all three performances of the play and the location for the first performance. The Eagle Pass Public Library hosted the second and third performances of the play at their newly renovated library, in downtown Eagle Pass. Eagle Pass Parks and Recreation also provided transportation for more than 70 EPISD students to attend a performance of the drama production. SWTJC faculty members Veronica Williams and Brandon Gurwell were also pivotal collaborators on the project.
All three performances of the play were a great success. Xitlalli, Diego, Yezenia, Nyckole, and Onesimo performed to great acclaim. Over 300 SWTJC students, faculty, EPISD students, and the Eagle Pass community members came out in droves to watch the SWTJC students who zealously dedicated their time and effort into making the drama production a phenomenal realization for the SWTJC-EP Fine Arts Company.
