Surgical Technology Program Launched at Southwest Texas College

Uvalde, TX, July 24, 2024 - Southwest Texas College (SWTX) is launching a new Surgical Technology Program, offering a pathway for aspiring medical professionals. The program is expected to welcome its first cohort in spring 2025.

Rigorous Accreditation Process

The program is undergoing a rigorous accreditation process to ensure it meets the highest educational standards. According to program director Ray Flores, students in the first class will participate in the accreditation process and become eligible for the certification exam upon successful accreditation. A site visit for accreditation is scheduled for the program's mid-clinical phase.

Experienced Program Director

Flores has extensive experience in the field. He started his career as a surgical technician after graduating from the San Antonio College of Medical & Dental Assistants in 1992. In 2001, he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Texas Health Science Center—San Antonio.

Flores has worked in various surgical specialties, including orthopedics, general surgery, endoscopy, ophthalmology, and dental surgery, for over 30 years. He has worked at Uvalde Memorial Hospital, Dimmit Regional Hospital, and the Texas Center for Athletes.

"My goal is to ensure our students are well-prepared to enter the workforce and excel as surgical technologists," Flores said.

Comprehensive Curriculum and Clinical Training

The program will feature a comprehensive curriculum covering anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and surgical technology principles. Students will also learn sterile technique and surgical instrument use.

The first two semesters will focus on classroom-based theoretical learning, followed by hands-on clinical experience in the final semesters. Students will gain practical scrubbing, gowning, gloving and surgical assisting skills.

SWTX has partnered with several regional hospitals, including Uvalde Memorial Hospital, Dimmit Regional Hospital, Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center and Val Verde Regional Medical Center, to provide students with clinical experience in various surgical settings.

State-of-the-Art Simulation Lab

A highlight of the program is the state-of-the-art simulation lab scheduled for installation in August. The lab will feature advanced equipment, including a cholecystectomy simulator for gallbladder surgery practice, to allow students to practice procedures in a controlled environment.

Admission Requirements and Program Structure

Applicants must complete specific prerequisites, including courses in English, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and ethics. Flores said these prerequisites can be completed in one semester. Following this, students will undergo an application and interview process for admission into the two-year program, culminating in an associate degree.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will be prepared for careers as surgical technologists in hospitals, outpatient surgical centers and specialty clinics.

"Our goal is to produce highly skilled professionals who can meet the health care industry's demands," Flores said.

Flores added that the program has the potential to start new cohorts annually, depending on interest.

Looking Ahead

SWTX's Surgical Technology Program offers a robust education and practical experience, preparing students for successful careers in the medical field. With dedicated leadership and cutting-edge facilities, the program promises to be a valuable addition to the college's academic offerings.
