La Pryor, Knippa win titles in 59th annual high school tournament

The La Pryor Bulldogs and Knippa Lady Crushers are the 2018 champions of the 59th Annual SWTJC High School Invitational Basketball Tournament following finals action on Saturday, Dec. 1 in Uvalde. PHOTOS

La Pryor beat D’Hanis 59-28, while the Knippa Lady Crushers downed the Leakey Lady Eagles, 39-36 to claim the girl's title.

La Pryor’s win marks the second time the Bulldogs have been crowned champions of the college tournament since it began in 1961.

For the Lady Crushers, this is their sixth championship title during the 59 years of the tournament.

La Pryor junior Juan Valdez was the tournament most valuable player for the boys, while Knippa senior Rebekah Ramirez was the girl's MVP.

In other boy's games Saturday (Dec.1), Knippa went on to claim third place in the tournament with a 69-33 victory over the Brackett Tigers late Saturday afternoon, while the Sabinal Yellowjackets won the consolation title with their 63-48 win over the Nueces Canyon Panthers.

Other girl's division games on Saturday (Dec. 1) saw the La Pryor Lady Bulldogs beat the Brackett Tigerettes, 57-7., while Nueces Canyon beat the Sabinal Lady Jackets, 49-28, to win the consolation title.
