Resource fair attracts large crowd to college campus
The event's goal was to provide local and area mental health resources information in a fun and friendly environment to those impacted by the events of May 24 at Robb Elementary School.
“Our goal was to bring smiles to faces and offer a bit of comfort and fun to our hurting community. It seems that we reached our goal,” said SWTJC Chief of Staff Randa Schell. “The event was a huge success! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the volunteers from SWTJC and beyond who joined together for this wonderful event.”
According to Schell, hundreds of prizes were handed out, including stuffed animals, coloring books, colors, fidget poppers, basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, bikes, and other toys.
Kids had the opportunity to play in jumping castles, water slides, and the college swimming pool. Booths offered hot dogs, pizza, drinks, cotton candy, shaved ice, snow cones, activities, and a myriad of information.
The Uvalde Strong Rock Garden was established by several kids who painted positive messages on rocks.
Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez was in attendance and briefly spoke, assuring the community that he would do everything he could to get state resources to those in need.
SWTJC President Dr. Hector Gonzales delivered a welcome to the attendees where he voiced the college’s support for the entire community.
Jaclyn Gonzales, the wife of President Gonzales, was instrumental in organizing the event with the help of various college staff.
